What is acupuncture and Chinese medicine?
Chinese medicine is a whole-person healing modality that has been in continuous practice for over 2000 years.  Although it is commonly referred to in the US as ‘acupuncture’, acupuncture is merely one of the most widely-used of many treatments based on the Chinese medical theoretical system.  These other treatments include Chinese herbal therapy, Shiatsu or Tui Na bodywork, acupuressure, moxibustion, cupping, Gua Sha, dietary and lifestyle advice, and various forms of movement therapy like Qi Gong or Tai Chi.  This tradition regards human beings as complex energetic systems, from which spring both the physical body and the mind and spirit-- so diseases and disorders of any one of these might affect any of the others, and treatment of any of these might influence symptoms of any of the others.  Chinese medicine addresses physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual diseases and disorders by encouraging the patient’s energetic systems to balance the production and flow of qi (roughly, the energy or life-force), blood, and essence, and strengthening the systems to withstand the influence of external pernicious influences.

What is acupuncture and Chinese medicine good for?
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes that acupuncture has been conclusively proven to help the following.  It is not considered a comprehensive list, but is a good indicator of the breadth of applicability of this medicine.

What can I expect from a treatment?  What do I need to do to prepare for it?
During an initial acupuncture treatment, the licensed acupuncturist will ask you about your chief complaint, as well as your health history and general health.  The acupuncture is performed on a massage table, and you will usually remain fully-dressed; make sure your clothing will allow access to your legs to above the knee and your arms to your elbows.  Most patients feel very little needle sensation, though other sensations are often experienced-- most of which patients experience as pleasant and interesting.  You will typically be left to rest with the needles in for 15-25 minutes.  Other modalities, including bodywork, moxibustion, cupping, etc., may be used as well, and you can also be evaluated for herbal treatment during the same session.  You should leave feeling relaxed and energized, although some patients report some fatigue after their first session.

Group acupuncture is performed in a larger space with several other patients present.  The interview and treatment are abbreviated, but the treatments are still very effective.  Points on the head, arms and legs below the elbows and knees, and hands and feet are employed, so clothes can remain on and in-place.

Shiatsu treatments begin with a brief interview about goals and symptoms, followed by a diagnosis made with abdominal palpation. The bodywork is performed on a massage table or on a cushioned mat on the floor.  Patients should wear stretchy, soft, comfortable clothing, like sweats or yoga clothes, which fully cover them, including clean socks.

None of these treatments are expected to fully resolve your problem during one session, though we aim to have you feel better each time.  Your prognosis and treatment plan will vary by what issue you’re trying to address, how severe it is, how long you’ve had it, and your age and general health.

What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy involves the manipulation of muscle and other soft tissues of the body, for general relaxation or specific therapeutic purposes. Massage techniques can vary widely, for example: pressure can be applied with smooth, gliding strokes of the practitioner’s hands or forearms, while fingers and elbows can be utilized for static pressure or concentrated friction. The amount of pressure that a massage therapist uses can range from very gentle to quite deep. A Licensed Massage Therapist will tailor their treatments to each client’s individual needs and goals.

What is Massage Therapy good for?
Massage therapy is widely recognized for reducing stress and helping clients to achieve deep relaxation. The Mayo Clinic reports that massage may also be helpful for:

anxiety
digestive disorders
fibromyalgia
insomnia related to stress
myofascial pain syndrome
soft tissue strains or injuries
sports injuries
TMJ pain
What can I expect from a treatment? What do I need to do to prepare for it?

When you arrive for your first appointment, your therapist will take a few minutes to ask you about your general health, specific conditions that may affect your treatment, and goals for your treatment. Your therapist will also answer any questions that you may have. We recommend that you schedule a 60 or 90 minute session for your first visit.

Massage therapy is often performed on a massage table. You will privately undress to your level of comfort – some clients wear no clothing, some prefer to keep on undergarments or other clothing. You will be covered by a sheet at all times; your therapist will uncover only the part of your body that they are working on (i.e.: back, one leg, or one arm). Your comfort is your therapist’s main priority – please feel free to voice any concerns or preferences you may have before or during your massage.

Depending on the type of treatment plan you create with your massage therapist, you may leave your appointment feeling energized, or relaxed and sleepy. It is common for clients to fall asleep during a relaxation massage.

What is reiki?

Reiki is a gentle relaxation technique that has been reported to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It involves the transfer of universal life energy (prana, chi) through the palms/hands of a trained and certified practitioner, who serves as a channel. The reiki practitioner usually begins by assessing your energy centers and auric fields, and then focuses on clearing and rebalancing energy pathways that flow through and from each chakra, a Sanskrit word that refers to the main energy centers or energy wheels of the body. Reiki is usually completed on a massage table while the client is fully clothed. Light, non-invasive touch or no touch at all may be involved, based on the client’s preferences. Reiki is not intended for use in diagnosing, treating, or preventing dis-ease.

What can reiki help with?

- reducing stress
- improving sleep and focus
- improving digestion
- supporting recovery from injury or surgery
- anxiety
- depression
- fertility
- acute and chronic pain

What can I expect from a reiki session? What do I need to do to prepare for it?

Before the session, reserve space in your schedule for yourself so that you are not rushing to another commitment right away. Wear loose, comfortable clothes to the session. Avoid caffeine, smoking, alcohol, large meals before the session. Take time to share with the practitioner about any injuries, scars, sensitivities, and specific needs. The practitioner will walk you through a brief client history and consent form during your first visit.

During the session, the practitioner will move her hands around you using light, non-invasive touch and/or hovering above the physical body. You may experience sensations in your body such as heat or tingling, visualize colors or images, or notice old memories appear/resurface. Emotional release may also come up through crying/tearfulness or laughing. Some people fall asleep or enter a sleep-like state and experience deep relaxation. You are encouraged to keep an open mind and open heart, as people’s first time experiencing reiki can range from subtle/uneventful to intense. Don’t put expectations on yourself or force yourself to relax; allow the reiki to relax you.

After the session, you may feel refreshed and energized, becoming more grounded and focused; however, you may also feel more tired in the evening than usual, an indication of the body’s natural healing response. Pay attention to what your body needs and prioritize rest and sleep as much as possible. If certain thoughts or memories repeat themselves, consider journaling or meditating on them without judgment. In order for buried emotional/mental/spiritual wounds to heal, they must first come to the surface and this often feels unfamiliar and uncomfortable for most people. For further insight or guidance, always feel free to contact the reiki practitioner with any questions or comments as you move through your process.

What is Astrology?

Astrology has been around for thousands of years, originating in Mesopotamia, and up until the 17th century, it was studied and practiced around the world. It was often used as an important part of decision-making and guidance in life, both for personal matters as well as the governing of groups.

It adheres to the adage, As above, so below, with the understanding that we are truly made of stars. This idea precedes modern science in the West, which became reductionist and materialistic, with the strong influence of thinkers like Darwin and Newton. However, scientists today are beginning to embrace this concept again, thanks to quantum physics and astro-physics, amongst other growing areas of study.

Astrology is the study of patterns in human beings, both individually and collectively, that mirror the archetypal qualities of the planets in the sky - from our Sun and Moon, to the far reaches of Neptune and Pluto.

Why would someone get an astrology reading?

Many people will seek out an astrologer for a few reasons: either to get an in-depth reading of their natal chart - the map of the sky at the exact time and location of one’s birth, which offers much insight into the workings of the individual psyche, both the gifts and the challenges; or with a specific question in mind, concerning events, experiences, in one’s life, past, present or future, or a part of themselves they wish to understand more.

Carl Jung is known to have said, “psychology will be a dinosaur science until it includes astrology,” and he used astrological charts in his own sessions with clients.

There are also many astrologers who offer ‘forecasts’ geared more towards the collective energies at play in the world, and how this is apt to affect groups of people and countries, as well as the planet. Much can be learned by observing the cyclical nature of the celestial patterns in the sky, and applying them to the patterns of our evolving civilizations.

What kind of astrology sessions are offered at CLINIC?

An introductory astro dive is offered, which includes a shorter, 30 minute session, giving you a little taste of what a full natal chart reading might offer.

The natal birth chart reading is a more in-depth, 75 minute exploration of your birth chart, including a discussion of the strongest planetary signatures in the sky at the time of your birth, and what that means in terms of your character, your life lessons, both the gifts and the challenges. Current happenings in the sky that might affect you personally are also explored.

A returning astrology reading is also available for those who have already had a natal reading at CLINIC, and this provides an opportunity to explore a specific question or life area that you are seeking some help with, another perspective, and a way to work with the energies at play.

For the astrology aficionados and spiritual seekers, a seasonal astrology package is offered, offering a special of four sessions a year. This will allow you the chance to check in seasonally with your astrologer, and get your own ‘astrological forecast’ for the season, and how the current happenings are apt to affect you personally.

What is Integrative Acupressure?

Integrative acupressure is a powerful yet gentle healing modality that combines traditional Chinese medical theory with modern medical knowledge to provide a comprehensive container for healing. The foundation of acupressure is similar to that of acupuncture and shiatsu — the energetic meridian networks. Congestion and imbalance within a meridian causes dis-ease and stress to accumulate in the associated bodily systems. Acupressure uses finger pressure to “run” or massage along the meridian network, promoting the rebalancing of healthy flowing qi, life force energy.

Integrative acupressure combines this energetic approach with a method of non-forceful musculoskeletal release. This method incorporates neurological repatterning techniques to help retain those new patterns long after the session. Coupled with this are several powerful modalities including cranial release, lymphatic release and abdominal organ release to optimize the free-flow of life force.

What is Integrative Acupressure good for?

Integrative Acupressure is beneficial for both acute and chronic health ailments. It can be particularly useful in treating: heightened nervous system stress, digestive issues, taxed kidneys and adrenal, post-chemotherapy and radiation symptoms, headache, neck pain and stiffness, nausea, anxiety, trauma, joint mis-alignment, TMJ, stagnant and swollen lymph, organ adhesions, sinus issues, autoimmune system disorders, arthritis, sleep troubles. The objective of the treatment is to bring the body into deeper relaxation, structural and energetic alignment, closer to its natural homeostatic state.

What can I expect from a treatment or series of treatments? What do I need to do to prepare for it?

Acupressure is available for people of all abilities, body-types, and many different types of ailments. Acute issues can often be addressed in just 1 or 2 sessions. The more chronic and long-term an issue is, the longer it may take to address fully. Acupressure is an extremely powerful tool for mitigating the effects of long-term stress in the body. Sessions are performed fully-clothed on a massage table. Most types of clothing are good, thinner and looser clothing is best. Before your first session begins we will discuss your symptoms and goals for treatment. As appropriate, you will be on your belly for part of the session and on your back for part. Acupressure sessions can be profoundly healing and deeply emotional. During the session your job is just to relax deeply. I will assist you, as needed, to recognize what is arising physically and emotionally, and to stay present with your body's experience.

What is Thai massage?

Thai Massage is performed with the client fully dressed in loose comfortable clothing and uses compression, gentle traction, rocking, stretches and therapist assisted movement to achieve deep relaxation as well as improved flexibility, circulation, and energy flow for total mind-body balance.

Thai Massage is one of the three branches of Traditional Thai Medicine and has roots in Theravada Buddhism, indigenous Thai healing practices, Chinese Medicine, and Ayurveda.  It combines rocking, compression, passive stretching, traction and movement of the joints to remove blockages along energy lines called sen in Thai. At the heart of each session is a foundation of loving-kindness or goodwill (metta in Pali).  The whole treatment is a graceful, nurturing, moving meditation.

Who can benefit from Thai massage?

Thai massage is deeply relaxing.  It can relieve muscular tension, improve flexibility, and promote the free flow of energy for an overall feeling of well being. Sessions can be focused on achieving a relaxed state of mind-body balance or address a specific physical concern.  Many clients report feeling greater ease when breathing and a general sense of openness after a treatment.  Thai massage is great for clients who prefer not to undress or have sensitivities to oils and creams.

What can I expect from a treatment or a series of sessions? What do I need to do to prepare for it?

Your session will begin with a thorough intake to assess your current needs and any precautions or modifications that might be appropriate.  The session is performed with the client fully clothed in loose or stretchy clothing which allows for movement (e.g. sweats or leggings and a t-shirt). No oil or lotion is applied to the skin.  Traditionally Thai massage is performed on the floor on a mat with the support of pillows and bolsters as needed.  Bodywork might be done with the client laying face-down, face-up or on their side.  If getting down on the floor presents an access barrier, sessions can be modified to be performed on a massage table.  The therapist uses hands, forearms, elbows, knees and feet to apply pressure and at times uses their body as a fulcrum or support for the client’s body in different positions.

Chair massage is performed in a specially designed chair with your clothes on. No oil or lotion is applied.  It is focused on the back, shoulders, neck, arms, and head.  It is designed to relax the muscles and improve flexibility and circulation.

Who can benefit from chair massage?

Chair massage is perfectly suited for a workday break from long hours in-front of a screen, typing, standing or driving.  The shorter duration is easier to fit into your day between meetings or errands and still provides many of the benefits of a full massage.  A chair massage can help spark creativity, reduce pain, anxiety, tension and stress, boost immunity, prevent or alleviate repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome, and improve sleep.  Chair massage is great for clients who prefer not to undress or have sensitivities to oils and creams. It is also well suited to clients who cannot lie down for a massage due to medical conditions.

What can I expect from a treatment or a series of sessions? What do I need to do to prepare for it?

Your session will begin with a quick review of your intake form and goals for your customized treatment.  You will be ergonomically seated in a specialized adjustable massage chair, with your face resting in a cradle. Your face will be looking down towards the ground, while your arms rest on a special shelf.  Your therapist will use a mix of compression, kneading, acupressure, percussion, joint mobilization, and stretches while you relax in a fully supported position.

After this you will lay on the treatment table and receive the healing work. Following the healing we will debrief about what came up and discuss if further treatment may be necessary. After completing health history forms, you will have a comprehensive intake with the NP. At that time, we will set the primary goals and plan for follow-up visits, which are typically needed to address most chronic or complex issues. At the end of the first visit, you should have a better sense of the scope of your health problem/s and have a preliminary plan to address them. The process includes reflective practice: unlike many rushed standard healthcare appointments, we build in time to reflect on and research your health concerns. The NP may ask you to get additional information (test results, labs, symptom diaries, etc) and may have new questions after this reflection. Subsequent visits will be more focused based on the agreed-upon plan; some people like regular check-ins or the ability to have access for a quick consult when new test results arrive or health situations change.

Just like a CSA doesn’t replace a grocery store, I do not replace your PCP or specialists, but I will enrich your healthcare experience and you will support local practitioners! As an independent consultant working directly for your interests is my top priority. This outside perspective allows me to see your issues with a fresh perspective and avoid the constraints in conventional healthcare settings.

Similarly, I typically do not prescribe medications or tests (except for Liver Health Check-ups), though I will review them and may recommend your other healthcare providers consider them with rationales. This enabled me to focus on you and the big picture objectively and clearly- like how an individual therapist helps with relationship issues.

I don’t treat acute medical problems like urgent care, however, if I have concerns for one I will recommend appropriate evaluation through traditional channels.

I meet people where they are: choose telehealth or an in-person appointment. Telehealth appointments are available to anyone in Massachusetts at the time of the visit. You may already have key test results or other medical information related to your concern, but I will help you figure out what is important so it’s not essential to do a lot of work ahead of time.

I am honored to join Clinic Alternative Medicines. I was trained to be a primary care provider and received a Masters of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Academy of Chinese Cultural and Health Studies in California. While there, I interned at a bustling acupuncture clinic in downtown Oakland, where I worked with patients from all walks of life. I also wrote a research paper about the effects of acupuncture on depression. Previously, I received my Bachelor’s from Hampshire College in history and education, and later studied western herbalism for two years at the California School of Herbalism and Ancestral Apothecary’s Cecemanna program. I worked as a volunteer health educator at the SAGE project in San Francisco, where I provided resources and held small-group sessions with at-risk women to address health needs including issues of substance addiction, relationship health, and post-incarceration and sex worker health. I am a nationally board-certified acupuncturist.

As a queer, nonbinary, mixed-race person, I welcome people from all backgrounds to experience a trauma-informed space of non-judgement and understanding, where we can work together to encourage your system to experience more attunement and ease. I have a particular affinity and interest in pain management, mental/emotional/spiritual disorders (including anxiety, depression, and attachment issues), sleep disorders, respiratory health, digestive issues, and facial rejuvenation. I love working with highly sensitive people and incorporating coaching on energetic sovereignty.

I live in Amherst and can be found spending time in nature, nerding out with a book, making playlists, dancing, cooking Iranian and Italian food, and working in community for collective liberation.

Dr Dunn is not currently taking new patients.

I have always been passionate about natural health - since childhood I’ve always felt best when I exercised, meditated and ate well. Looking back on my childhood, it was my father who was my inspiration for becoming a Naturopathic Doctor. He was a big believer in minimizing conventional medicine, using it when necessary, and instead focusing on lifestyle to stay well. I only became aware of Naturopathic Medicine as I explored more holistic ways to approach my own health. When I discovered that it meant using lifestyle, homeopathy and botanical medicine to help heal and optimize your health, I knew I needed to learn more.

I started to work with a Naturopathic Doctor on improving my immune system and sleep support. The work we did together was revolutionizing - not only did it change the way I looked at my health but also empowered me to take control my health. While I was earning my master’s degree at the University of Washington, I began to take classes in health and slowly realized that I wanted to have a deeper understanding of the body as a whole and to use nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy and other natural remedies to heal myself and to help others heal. Thus, my journey at Bastyr began.

As a mother and wife, I employ my Naturopathic training on a regular basis in my personal life. It plays an integral part in how my husband and I raise our child. This includes making sure she has a healthy diet, providing extra nutrients and botanicals depending on her needs, and emphasizing a lifestyle that is emotionally and physically nourishing. It isn’t always easy or a smooth process, but I am always grateful to use my education to provide our child with a strong, healthy and resilient foundation.

If you are looking to get to the root cause of your illness or symptom and want to use a holistic approach to take back your health, you have come to the right place. Or maybe you are looking for solutions that don’t just mask the problem or create additional problems. Let’s work together to get you back on track with solutions that will not only provide fruitful results but will also help you feel younger, stronger and more resilient.

If you would like to schedule a free 15-minute consult, I can be reached via email at drdunn@drmaureendunn.com.   For more information about me or my practice, please visit www.drmaureendunn.com.

Christine Pfeil (last name pronounced “file”) is a licensed massage therapist committed to full-body wellness. (License No. 18101-MT-MT)

Originally from Philadelphia, Christine spent a decade in Washington, DC, before landing in Western, MA in 2017. She loves calling the Pioneer Valley home, with its mountains, rivers, farmland, bike routes, and incredible community. And, most importantly, its abundance of food-related festivals. (Look for her at Asparagus Fest!)

After an undergraduate education in psychology, and a graduate degree in business, Christine finally (and happily) answered the persistent call towards a career in bodywork. She is a graduate from The Massage School in Hadley, MA.

Christine believes in the transformative power of bodywork, and believes massage therapy can harness the body’s innate capacity for restoration. Christine integrates a diverse range of techniques into her practice, including Swedish, neuromuscular, and deep tissue modalities.

Christine specializes in working with clients experiencing neck pain and shoulder pain, and aims to help her clients find relief from chronic pain while increasing mobility.

At her Jesuit college, Christine was taught the practice of “cura personalis” meaning “care for the whole person.” She brings this same care-for-the-whole approach to massage therapy. Each session is tailored to meet the needs of her clients, with the intention to provide long-term healing and balance.

Through intentional approaches, she invites her clients to experience the transformative benefits of massage, and the greater well-being and joy that it can provide.

My passion for massage is fueled by the desire to share the pure joy, pleasure and relaxation that I experience when receiving amazing bodywork. The intention throughout our session is to hold space for you to show up just as you are and watch what unfolds for your mind-body-spirit in the presence of mindful care. My goal is to invite ease and relief from suffering. I aim for you to leave your session feeling so good that it ripples throughout the rest of your daily interactions. At its loftiest, the work I do is an invitation to participate in a cultural revolution centered in embodied joy, care, gratitude, ease, spaciousness, compassion, and liberation. I’m a gardener planting seeds. Massage is my way of making the revolution irresistible.* It is a form of pleasure activism.**

I approach bodywork from a client-centered and collaborative perspective. I bring my training, experience and curiosity to each session and you bring your life-long expertise in what it’s like to live in your body. We begin with a conversation where we go over your relevant medical history, how you are arriving at that moment, what your expectations are for the session, and whether there are areas of concern on which you would like to focus. This intake sets the foundation for the work we will do, but your goals can evolve during the course of the session and I can adjust techniques as needed. Together, we may decide to incorporate the use of a hot pack, CBD salve or cupping into the session. These add-ons are optional and offered at no additional cost. I open the bodywork with a grounding meditation. My style is slow, rhythmic and precise. I approach the body three-dimensionally with satisfying pressure and invite gentle movement into the session. While the work that we do might at times bring about strong sensation, my goal is always to stay on the side of pleasure. Causing additional pain or tensing up sends the wrong message to the nervous system and is counterproductive. Feedback is welcome at any point to help me meet your body’s needs in the moment. The bodywork often ends with re-centering and, if you’re open to it, an offering of metta or phrases of lovingkindness. At the end of your session we check in again and consider next steps before checking you out. I don’t accept tips, so you don’t have to worry about doing math in the midst of post-massage euphoria. You can just be on your blissful way and share the love.

Education, credentials and experience

I graduated from the Center for Natural Wellness School of Massage Therapy in Albany, NY in 2018, became a NY licensed massage therapist in 2019, and got licensed in MA in 2022. I have been studying Thai massage with Shama Kern of the Thai Healing Massage Academy since 2019. I trained in The Joy of Grief Massage with Amy Joy Taylor of The Institute for Grief Massage in 2019 and completed a certificate on Holding Space for Pregnancy Loss with The Institute for the Study of Birth, Breath and Death in 2019. I completed a 200 hour yoga teacher training with My Vinyasa Practice in 2021. I am always learning new approaches to massage and energy work, and am currently in the process of getting certified for Sarga bodywork, an amazing style of barefoot massage that I can’t wait to share. Stay tuned for that offering in the near future!

In addition to my practice at CLINIC, I work with the People’s Medicine Project, providing massage and Spanish language support at their on-farm clinics. Prior to becoming a massage therapist I worked as a produce manager, professional gardener, organic vegetable grower, actor in theater for young audiences, non-profit arts fundraiser, museum educator and restaurant server. I studied History Museum Studies at the Cooperstown Graduate Program and have a BA in History from Amherst College. I am an avid reader with a thirst for learning new things. As a queer, multicultural, biracial Black woman I am a natural cross-pollinator and enjoy weaving interdisciplinary connections. I love yoga, meditation, being in the water, cooking, eating, dancing and singing in community. I was born in Spain and am a native Spanish speaker.

CLINIC owner and Wellness Tycoon

I graduated from Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in September of 2009, with a special emphasis on Chinese medical research.  I began my practice on State Street in Northampton in April of 2010. In November of 2011, I started CLINIC Alternative Medicines, so that I could better serve patients by bringing together a broader range of wellness resources under one roof, on Main Street in Northampton. I moved CLINIC to its ‘forever home’ at 53 Center Street in Northampton, finally achieving the vision I had for it even back in my acupuncture school days, in 2022. I am actively involved in improving Northampton community life, especially with my involvement in the Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce, where I served as a member of the Board of Directors for 6 years.

I am a general practitioner with special emphases on pain issues and emotional and psychological stress. I love working with stressed-out women.

I am a fairly ‘feely’ acupuncturist. I believe that patients do best when they not only passively receive treatment, but when they are also able to tune in to their body and experience the changes taking place. I think it’s also important to learn to differentiate between the natural, physiological experience of change— even intense change— and pain. I am one of very few practitioners in the area who does muscular fasciculation/ trigger point needling/ ‘dry needling’ techniques, along with bleeding, cupping, and other more aggressive treatments, when appropriate. My goal is to have patients get off the table feeling better every time, and to build on that progress from appointment to appointment. I walk the line delicately between encouraging comfort and a meditative, restful moment, and intently encouraging change.

Prior to my career in Chinese medicine, I was in academic philosophy.  I live in Northampton with my partner, stepchild, preschooler, and kitty, and love doing home and garden projects, biking in all weather, pointing at audience members while singing karaoke, and being a contender at trivia.

My acupuncture practice began in 2006 on Main Street, as Northampton Community Acupuncture, where I offered both private sessions and community acupuncture until 2010, and then ran a thriving community acupuncture clinic from 2010-2022.

Since joining CLINIC in 2022, I’ve been enjoying offering both private and community sessions again. Having performed thousands of acupuncture treatments over the years, I continue to be both humbled and amazed by the power and elegant simplicity of this ancient medicine. My needling style is quick, gentle, often painless, and meant to help you relax immediately.

My education includes a research-focused Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Neuroscience and Philosophy (1994), a Master’s Degree in Acupuncture at the New England School of Acupuncture (2006), and two years apprenticing with Kiiko Matsumoto. I completed a program in Applied Astrology with astrologer and psychologist, Debra Silverman in 2023-24, and continue with ongoing studies in astrology.

I identify as non-binary (she/they), believing that our fullest expression of self is fluid, and therefore not limited to an either/or paradigm. I welcome folks of all genders to work with me in a safe, supported environment. In fact, I believe that energy medicine can be deeply healing, as a pathway for helping people become fully embodied, embracing all of who you are and integrating all that you have experienced, to reach your fullest expression.

I believe that the highest form of medicine and healing includes both intellect and intuition, the mind working with the heart, and both in alignment with spirit. What this means for how I practice is that, while I have spent thousands of hours dedicated to science, research, and learning the system of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I am also an intuitive and empathic healer, and believe that both are essential to practicing medicine.

What this means for you as a client -  you will be seen as a whole human being, not just a diagnosis. Why does this matter?  Because the current practice of Western medicine is full of specialists, who focus on one part of the body or another. While there are benefits to developing expertise in how one specific body part or system works, the result is that the whole picture is often lost, and the context is lost.

When we can see (and be seen by others as) ALL of who we are, that allows us to BE all of who we are in the world - a gift to ourselves and to everyone around us.

ASTROLOGY OFFERINGS

I am passionate about learning, and sharing my ideas with others. I took a deep dive into studying astrology in 2023, completing the Applied Astrology program with Debra Silverman, with the intention of incorporating astrology readings as a healing modality into my current work. The studies continue, and I imagine that I may find more ways to bridge my two passions as time goes on.

Both Chinese Medicine and Astrology are an art and a science. Both require learning a new language, and they are both complete systems of understanding how we operate. Each system illuminates how every one of us is a microcosm of the whole. For me personally, astrology has helped me uncover, reclaim, and bring forth parts of my being that I hadn’t realized had been forgotten or neglected, and with this newly reclaimed joy and hopefulness, I would love to share these tools and seeds of wisdom with you! I practice Western-based astrology, and am currently studying humanistic and evolutionary astrology.

Throughout my life’s journey I have always been an empath, deeply attuned to the unseen energies that flow through and around us. In 2019 I became certified as a Shamanic Healer, through a nine month intensive training. My training is based on the techniques of a healing lineage which originates in Peru. The tools that I use can range from energy clearing and balancing to an energetic deep dive into purging old heavy energy that is no longer serving you on your path forward. Soul retrieval and divination are also used in my practice when appropriate.

Until recently, I spent the better part of the past decade working as a public school teacher. I worked on sharing the joys of science with middle school children. I have often found the crossover between science and mysticism to be profound and inspirational. As both seem to be a quest to better understand ourselves and our shared reality.

Before settling down to raise a family, I was an avid traveler. One of my most profound experiences was in 2004. I spent 3 months in Southern India practicing yoga and meditation. The time I spent there was an invaluable gift.

In addition to my Certification in Shamanic Healing through the Jaguar Path, I hold a Bachelor Degree in Geology from Mount Holyoke College as well as a Master of Education from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

As a Pioneer Valley Native, I am delighted to be sharing my practice with the broader community!

Hi! I’m Nora (she/ her). I am a nationally board-certified Acupuncturist licensed to practice in the state of MA. I graduated from the New England School of Acupuncture with a Masters in both Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. During my training I completed clinical internships at Boston Medical Center, Cambridge Health Alliance and MCPHS University. My academic and clinical interests include acute and chronic pain, anxiety and depression, menstrual irregularities/ women’s health, headaches/migraines, gastrointestinal disorders, immunity and Chinese dietary therapy. I am particularly interested in the intersection between traditional Chinese medicine and biomedicine.

I am also an herbalist, an educator, a mother and a partner.

I love my work as an Acupuncturist because it allows me to use my skills as a listener and a healer to bring people closer to themselves: to inhabit their bodies with more freedom and less pain. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Intellectual History from Lafayette College. Before becoming an Acupuncturist I worked in education: as a naturalist, environmental educator, farm educator and community organizer. In my work as an outdoor educator I grew to love native plants and developed an interest in plant medicine. That love led me to Western MA where I worked for Acupuncturist and herbalist William Siff, L.Ac (Goldthread Herbal Apothecary) - making medicine. When my daughters entered school - I decided to take the plunge and go back to school myself. Studying Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine has been an extraordinary journey and a source of endless fascination. I treat a wide variety of conditions and use my years of experience as an educator, a mother, a partner and an herbalist to inform my work.

When I don’t have my nose in an Acupuncture textbook you can find me drinking coffee and reading novels, poetry, science fiction and the travel section of the NY times.
